Creating a Basket of Newspaper Tubes (tutorial)

Rustic Charm and Eco-Friendliness: Creating a Basket of Newspaper Tubes. If you’re searching for a sustainable and creative way to repurpose old newspapers, crafting a basket using newspaper tubes is a wonderful option.

This do-it-yourself project allows you to transform humble newspaper pages into a practical and visually appealing basket. With its rustic charm and eco-friendly nature, a basket made of newspaper tubes can serve as a unique storage solution or a lovely decorative piece in your home. In this article, we will guide you through the step-by-step process of creating this functional and environmentally conscious craft.

This small basket is woven from different paper vines. To create your own newspaper tube basket, gather the following materials:

  • magazine tubes – 25 pieces
  • newspaper tubes -23 pieces
  • PVA glue
  • clothespins – 10 pieces

First, wind the tubes. If you don’t know how to twist, then watch the available video tutorial on twisting newspaper tubes:

So, the weaving begins with twelve crossed magazine sticks. A soft newspaper tube wraps around the entire structure and is fixed. The bottom is weaved up to the fourth row, then all the magazine sticks rise, and begin to weave the walls of the future basket.

Now all weaving is done from solid magazine tubes. After passing six rows in height, the work is stopped, and the tips are glued together and fixed with a clothespin:

Stepping back along the racks to a height of 3-4 cm, weaving continues another six rows up. The walls are finished, it remains only to cut and fix the racks. Leave uncut places for weaving handles:

Now let’s make the handles. Stepping back two rows of weaving down, stretch six newspaper tubes, bend them in half, and braid them into a braid. Glue the end of the braid and secure with a clothespin. On the other hand, the same braid is made. When the tips dry a little, connect both pigtails and wrap tightly with any bobbin thread. Place a newspaper tube on top to cover the attachment point. Make the same braid along the edges of the handle and thickly coat the entire resulting structure with PVA glue:

Paint the woven basket with varnish, and after complete drying, decorate it with a satin ribbon and a rose twisted from a piece of artificial leather:
